This week I started working on a set of Wishon 565MC Forged Irons. A great set of irons for any scratch to mid handicap golfers. If you shoot 80 or less this is a great set of irons for you, and you will love them.

The 565MC is a Forged Carbon Steel CNC Machined Deep Back Cavity, for the highest MOI in a true forged iron design…
565 Features include:

Wishon Golf’s 2nd generation 560 Series forged iron adds a more solid on-center feel to the best off center forgiveness in a forged carbon steel iron

New center cavity half-moon weighting increases on-center impact feel while offering a very slight increase in shot trajectory

Low-offset design also features a slightly thinner top line than the original 560MC

Completely CNC machined back cavity ensures precise CG position for each head number with a beautiful cosmetic appearance

Fully radiused tour grind type sole design – this is a model for scratch to middle handicap players

Double nickel chrome pearl plated finish with glass bead blast highlights – CNC machined score lines within 2010 USGA rule guidelines

Using both deflection and frequency to measure the flex on his shafts. First measurements are to obtain the flex at the 15 inch, then 25 inch, then 35 inch point in the raw shafts. By using a formula the relative overall flex for each shaft can be determined to allow assigning each shaft to the right head for best performance and consistency. This is not done in mass produced clubs because it takes a lot of time to do. It’s an extra step similar to things a custom race car might do to “blueprint” a car engine for best performance. Little things make a big difference.

Once the assignments are made the shafts will be tested for spine position and FLO (Flat Line Oscillation) will be found for each shaft and aligned with each clubface to make the impacts more consistent swing after swing. This will give my golfer more center face hits and assure that each club returns to the same place swing after swing.

All of the heads will be weighed and weights adjusted if needed to obtain a very tight MOI balance throughout the set. This will make each clubs swing the same as all other clubs in the set so the golfer feels like he’s swinging the same club regardless of the club in his hands.

Why do I use Wishon Shafts almost exclusively in my custom built clubs? Because I know they will fit the swing I’m trying to help. Why? See below…

A Wishon Golf clubhead custom fit and custom built with a Wishon Golf shaft offers golfers the absolute best fit and allows golfers to achieve success in their search for their perfect golf clubs.

Wishon Golf – not simply the golf industry leader in clubhead design but the industry leader in shaft design as well.

The industry wide contributions of Wishon Golf to understanding and advancing shaft performance technology include:

In 1991 Wishon was the first to publish a book – a book, not just an article – solely devoted to shaft technology titled, The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting. This was the first time anyone in the golf industry published empirical measurements of the flex and other specifications of thousands of shafts. For the first time ever, this book made it possible to definitively compare shaft stiffness to know how stiff one shaft is to others. For many years after the book was published, to keep the industry up to date, Wishon provided an annual publication of each year’s new assortment of shafts introduced by all the shaft companies.

Wishon Golf was the first to publish measurements of the full-length stiffness progression of shafts with its ground-breaking Shaft Bend Profile Software in 2006. The data in Wishon’s 1991 book only offered one measurement of stiffness for comparison purposes. Wishon’s Shaft Bend Profile Software visually showed golfers how thousands of shafts compared in their stiffness over their entire length from butt to tip. With this never before seen information it was possible to predict the performance of a shaft for any golfer before the golfer bought or tried the shaft in a club.

Wishon Golf was the first to clearly explain exactly how shafts bent, twisted, curved and performed during the swing in its technical writings during the 2000s. Prior to this no one had ever explained exactly how different swing movements caused the shaft to bend in different ways and in different places on the shaft.

Wishon Golf was the first to identify the exact swing characteristics that have a significant effect on the bending and performance of the shaft. With its focus on evaluating the golfer’s Transition Force, Downswing Tempo and Point of Release, Wishon Golf pushed the industry years ahead in the ability to evaluate a golfer’s swing for the purpose of accurate shaft fitting.

And now, with its emphasis on studying the full length stiffness progression of thousands of shafts, Wishon Golf is pushing the envelope with shaft designs that uncover performance and feel elements in golf shafts that have never been attempted, let alone even envisioned.

Wishon Golf custom designed shafts deserve every bit as much respect as Wishon designed clubhead models. Different swing movements most definitely require different shaft designs to optimize each golfer’s ability to maximize their ball striking potential. Wishon Golf shafts are only designed for specific golfer swing types and represent the culmination of over 30 years of in-depth shaft research and incorporate a number of golf industry shaft design and shaft R & D firsts. In truth, no shaft company has contributed as much to the technical understanding of shaft performance and to the advancement of accurate shaft fitting technology than Wishon Golf.

The major shaft companies have kept shaft fitting in a state of total confusion forever by continuing to use us generic, undefined letters or single digit numbers to inform golfers of the FLEX, perhaps the single most important specification of a golf shaft.

With absolutely no standards in the game for how stiff any of the 5 primary flexes (L, A, R, S, X) are, it is an absolute fact that the R flex from one shaft company is the same stiffness as the S flex from another or the A flex from a third. Wishon Golf never designs a shaft without including an accurate swing speed range based on empirical measurements of the shaft’s stiffness to convey exactly how fast the golfer needs to swing to be able to be matched to the flex design of the shaft.

The graph below shows the full length stiffness measurements for 7 different shafts, all labeled by their respective companies as R flex. A quick look at the 41 inch grip end measurement shows all these R flex shafts vary in stiffness by 28 cycles per minute – a three flex range, yet all are labeled as an R flex. The same is true for shafts within every letter flex designation.

Not only that but the shaft industry has also used completely generic descriptions of how shafts vary in the distribution of stiffness over their full length. Just how is a golfer to know how stiff is a shaft with the description of “tip stiff” or “butt firm” or “low bend point” or any of the other completely non-specific labels given to shafts to try to help golfers choose what’s best for them. Every shaft maker designs their different model shafts with a different distribution of how the stiffness changes over the length of the shaft but they give golfers nothing in the way of empirical, specific information to compare shafts to be able to know which shafts are suitable, and which are not for each golfer.

The graph below shows the full length stiffness measurements for two shafts which are virtually the same for the butt stiffness but vary hugely in their stiffness over the rest of the length of the shaft. Both are labeled as R flex but are so different that any experienced golfer would swear one was an R and the other was softer than an L. How could golfers possibly choose the best shaft flex for their game in the face of this total lack of definitive information?

Coupling what I’ve learned from Tom to what I learned from Mr. Haskins and his assistant pro and from Bob Toski at the PGA school I now know why and how to fit golfers to a golf club that enhances the talents they have and maximizes their potential as a golfer. With my clubs you are going to really enjoy the game because you are going to hit a higher percentage of quality golf shots and you are going to lower your handicap too. When I say quality golf shots, what I mean is, to hit the ball solidly in the center of the face consistently and hitting it more accurately. Most of your wildly off line shots will disappear and your distances will be more consistent and likely longer too.

Your tee shots are going to be in the fairway more often and a bit longer than you hit them now.

Your iron shots are going to be on the green more often and closer to the pin than before and they too are likely to be a bit longer too.

I am told that between the added yardage off the tee and the added yardage with iron shots many of my golfers are hitting an average of about 2 clubs less into par 4 holes than before. Where they used to hit a 6 iron, now they hit an 8 iron or similar.

When you miss a fairway or miss a green you are not going to be in deep trouble nearly as often because your dispersion is going to be a good bit less than before.

Most golfers tell me their misses are about half as far from the fairway or from the pin as they used to be.

Over the past 20 years I’ve had the well known brands you know about in my fitting system and their shafts right next to the Wishon heads and shafts. Through testing with a Flightscope the Wishon heads prove superior in performance 95% of the time. So I’ve narrowed my choices to the designs that I know work based on testing with my golfers.

ABOUT TOM WISHON

With more than 35 years of experience in the field, Tom Wishon is recognized as one of the industry leaders in the research of golf club design, performance and clubfitting technology. Our R&D has been at the forefront of the golf industry including the development of more than fifty golf club design technology firsts, as well as countless discoveries in the science of golf club performance for golfers.

Having begun his golf equipment career in 1972, Tom Wishon has designed over 300 original and innovative clubhead models, more than any other single person in the 500 year history of the game.

Tom Wishon is the only designer from the custom clubmaking side of the golf industry whose clubhead designs have been used to win on the PGA Tour, the Champions Senior Tour and in Ryder Cup competition. He has designed and custom built the golf clubs used in competition by Scott Verplank, Bruce Lietzke, Ben Crenshaw, as well as the last set of clubs played by Payne Stewart before his tragic accident in 1999.

Tom is the also the author of 9 books within the field of golf club design, performance and clubfitting, in addition to hundreds of equipment related articles written for virtually every golf publication in the golf industry. As Terry McSweeney, Director of Communications for the PGA of America states, “Tom has the unique ability to communicate technical issues about golf equipment so non-technically minded people can easily understand and follow the subject”.

Two of Wishon’s books, The Search for the Perfect Golf Club and The Search for the Perfect Driver qualified for best-selling status and won successive Book of the Year awards in 2006 and 2007 from the International Network of Golf, the oldest and largest organization of golf industry media professionals in the world. Shortly after they were published, both books became a part of the curriculum for membership training in the PGA’s of Sweden, Great Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands.

He is considered the ‘go-to guy’ by the equipment editors for many of the major consumer golf publications in their search for honest, marketing-free explanations about the technical performance of golf clubs. Jim Achenbach, equipment editor for Golfweek magazine has said, “Tom is the smartest person in the golf industry when it comes to golf clubs.”

As Tom stated in making his decision to establish his own company in 2003, “I completely respect the product design work of the large golf equipment companies. But my three decades in golf club R&D has proven without question that the best set of golf clubs any golfer will ever play will be a set of professionally custom fit golf clubs, and not a set of standard made clubs simply bought off the shelf. I am committed to educating golfers about the tangible, game improvement benefits of being professionally custom fit because I know this is the only way any golfer can hope to play to the best of their ability and benefit the most from swing instruction.”

Features:

Enabled by the new 2-piece hollow body design, the Center of Gravity moves progressively through the set from lowest and most rear located on the #5 iron to highest and most forward located on the GW and SW to achieve more consistent shot shape and shot height for each iron in the set

The hollow body design throughout the set increases the MOI of each head by removing all mass from the inside of the head to be distributed all around the CG. The hollow body construction also enables the CG progression and uniform impact sound between the high COR and conventional COR heads in the set

Low number irons are better matched with their loft to CG position to achieve preferred shot shape/height and allow a wider range of players to be able to effectively hit the #5 and 6 irons to fly and carry with proper distance gaps

Traditional GW and SW profile shapes are combined with milled faces and a custom sole grind make the wedges a great choice even if they were standalone wedges and not part of the single length design

275g head weight with hosel weight bore allows assembly to any single length between 35.5” and 37.5” while still being able to achieve a reasonable range of swingweight/MOI (depending on shaft weight and grip weight).

I am very proud to be an Authorized Fitting Center for Tom Wishon Golf Technology. I was the first clubfitter in Georgia to be given that distinction, and I am totally sold on Tom Wishon Golf Technology clubhead design knowledge and experience. For a small boutique company the number of Golf Digest Hot List head designs they have received over the years is remarkable. Because Wishon Golf has never been a heavily marketed brand, few people in the game are aware of the number of clubhead design technology firsts that Tom Wishon has created in his three decades of clubhead design experience. Tom has accumulated over 100 firsts in the industry over the years. Many of them you are very familiar with but because of the lack of marketing on behalf of the companies for which Wishon has designed clubhead models, many of Wishon’s design firsts are thought to have been conceived and created by various major golf companies.

Over the years although I had many of the top OEM brands seen on the professional tours in my shop to test against the Wishon models Wishon heads dominated in performance time after time after time above all other brands. In head to head competition Wishon out performed all others nearly 75% of the time. Testing was done with a Flightscope and club connectors so I could test the heads on the same shafts in an A – B test. These were not customer picks, these were actual head to head competition where all else but the head were the same.

At my peak I had approximately 3 dozen driver heads and 2 dozen iron heads to test on over 300 different shafts. Wishon shafts went into a majority of the clubs I built also. I have complete confidence I can fit 90% of the amateur golfers who need custom clubs with Wishon Products.

In this photo I am shown presenting Tom Wishon with the Association of Golf Clubfitting Professionals award for Product of the Year for one of his innovations. I am a dedicated Tom Wishon believer. I sell the complete line of Wishon Golf Clubs, either by fitting you in person or by working with you from a distance if you can’t get to Columbus GA to see me in person.

But… over the years I’ve had enough golfers come to me from all around the country who cannot find a qualified club fitter in their area to convince me I can help a lot of golfers. From the horror stories I’ve heard about the “local fitting pros” who claim to know how to fit golf clubs, I’m convinced that my experience over the past 10 years in advancing custom fitting will allow me to do a better job of fitting most golfers than a sales clerk in a golf store.

Having done so many fittings over the past 10 years I believe I can do more by talking to you than most store clerks or so called fitters that see you in person. The fact they have a launch monitor doesn’t automatically make them qualified to use it. I can look at your chest X-ray but I can’t tell you what it means as far as your health is concerned. Just because a store clerk sees your swing data doesn’t mean he knows how to fit your clubs either. By use of my fitting form and an exchange of email and telephone calls I can use my experience to create a set of custom made golf clubs that will help you hit better shots and lower your golf scores. It took many years to develop a fitting form to get the information I need to understand your game and I continue to improve it as I learn more from phone calls and emails during the fitting process. Through my question and answer process I can narrow down your needs to get you into a set of quality custom made golf clubs that will improve the way you hit the ball. I can also give you instructions to help you work with your local golf shop after you receive your new custom fit golf clubs to make some critical adjustments that make the clubs more accurate.

I don’t want to leave you with the wrong impression about clubfitters, there are lots of good ones around. I’m just giving due caution that there are a lot of folks out there that actually think that because they have talked to a company representative and or read a few articles about fitting, they know what they are doing. They simply don’t know what they don’t know. Experience is the best teacher, even if they have been to school and read a lot of books. Nothing teaches you how to fit better than doing it repeatedly over a period of years. The best way to judge how qualified your clubfitter is would be to invest in Tom Wishon’s book, “The Search for the Perfect Golf Club” and read it. In the book Tom describes several levels of fitting and how to question your prospective fitter to determine if he is qualified to do a good job. Take the question from Tom’s book and interview your prospective fitter and see how he stacks up. If he doesn’t and you can’t find one nearby, give me a call. I can help.

Please look at the Wishon Clubs and if you want to order clubs you can email me r.nix@mcnixgolf.com and tell me what you want so I can call you, or call me at 862-821-3148 for pricing information and information on custom fitting and ordering the clubs.

WHY FITTING IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR AVERAGE GOLFERS

If you are taking lessons fitted clubs will make it easier for you to make the changes suggested by your Golf Pro. If you and only lift 10 pounds comfortably and control it well and you pick up something that weighs 20 pounds you are not going to control it well at all. Same for your golf clubs. If they are too heavy or too light, too stiff or too flexible, too long or too short you can’t control them as well as having the the right weight, right stiffness, and the right length for your ability.

IMPORTANCE OF SET MAKE UP

Set make up is one of the more important aspects of custom fitting. Every golfer need a club for every distance gap between his longest club and his shortest club. It doesn’t matter if those clubs are irons, hybrids or fairways as long as you have a club for each distance gap.
