According to a study conducted by Golf Digest, golfers who get custom fitted clubs can improve their game by an average of 2.5 strokes per round. This is because custom fitting ensures that the clubs are tailored to the golfer’s individual swing characteristics, such as swing speed, swing path, and angle of attack.

Custom fitting can also help golfers achieve more consistent ball flight and distance control, as well as improve their accuracy and overall performance on the course. In addition, custom fitting can help prevent injury by ensuring that the clubs are properly sized and weighted for the golfer’s body type and physical abilities.

It is important to note that the degree of improvement may vary depending on the individual golfer’s skill level and other factors such as practice habits and course conditions. However, overall, custom fitting has been shown to have a positive impact on a golfer’s game.

This week I started working on a set of Wishon 565MC Forged Irons. A great set of irons for any scratch to mid handicap golfers. If you shoot 80 or less this is a great set of irons for you, and you will love them.

The 565MC is a Forged Carbon Steel CNC Machined Deep Back Cavity, for the highest MOI in a true forged iron design…
565 Features include:

Wishon Golf’s 2nd generation 560 Series forged iron adds a more solid on-center feel to the best off center forgiveness in a forged carbon steel iron

New center cavity half-moon weighting increases on-center impact feel while offering a very slight increase in shot trajectory

Low-offset design also features a slightly thinner top line than the original 560MC

Completely CNC machined back cavity ensures precise CG position for each head number with a beautiful cosmetic appearance

Fully radiused tour grind type sole design – this is a model for scratch to middle handicap players

Double nickel chrome pearl plated finish with glass bead blast highlights – CNC machined score lines within 2010 USGA rule guidelines

Using both deflection and frequency to measure the flex on his shafts. First measurements are to obtain the flex at the 15 inch, then 25 inch, then 35 inch point in the raw shafts. By using a formula the relative overall flex for each shaft can be determined to allow assigning each shaft to the right head for best performance and consistency. This is not done in mass produced clubs because it takes a lot of time to do. It’s an extra step similar to things a custom race car might do to “blueprint” a car engine for best performance. Little things make a big difference.

Once the assignments are made the shafts will be tested for spine position and FLO (Flat Line Oscillation) will be found for each shaft and aligned with each clubface to make the impacts more consistent swing after swing. This will give my golfer more center face hits and assure that each club returns to the same place swing after swing.

All of the heads will be weighed and weights adjusted if needed to obtain a very tight MOI balance throughout the set. This will make each clubs swing the same as all other clubs in the set so the golfer feels like he’s swinging the same club regardless of the club in his hands.

Many think we hit our irons so much farther because of some scientific breakthrough by the Original Equipment Manufacturers by their crack technology departments. Could it be something else?

In July I’ll be 73 years old. I’ve been playing golf since I was 15 years old. My first clubs were what my dad could cobble together for me from his old clubs. Some working good, some didn’t work at all. When I got my drivers license I got more serious about playing more golf and getting better equipment. I got a part time job after school that gave me enough time to play nearly every day because the golf course was only minutes away from my house and where I worked.

I got new woods that felt better and gradually saved enough for new irons too. The course where I played had once been celebrated as one of the best but had been allowed to go downhill over the years to the point that they rarely used the back nine and almost all play was on the front. Maybe because they didn’t cut the fairways and greens as often on the back. That allowed me to play the back nine and hit as many extra practice shots as I wanted on any hole because I was usually the only one back there.

So as I got better I wanted better equipment. I got subscriptions to all the golf magazines of the time and I read the ads and studied them for hints of what I needed for my game. I didn’t see it at the time but looking back it’s pretty obvious that a lot of the advertising was less than fully truthful. Looking back I can say that since I was 15 or 16 years old the golf industry has claimed every year that they had discovered the secret and the clubs were longer and straighter. A rough calculation of 58 years of longer and straighter show me that I should be hitting my driver about 750 or more yards by now. But I don’t.

So what’s up with the advertising?

Let’s start with the fact that physics and the USGA dictate how far I can hit a golf ball, not technology. That doesn’t mean that we haven’t had vast improvements in technology, because we have. But, it peaked some time ago. Ball speed off the clubface and the angle it is launched will determine how far a ball will carry no matter what technology we use. Since the USGA limits how fast a ball can come off the clubface a lot of the advertising claims we hear about and read about are pretty much just so much hooey. Why? Because the technology has been maxed out for years and they can’t go any farther than they were several years ago.

Think of it this way. If you have to travel 60 miles and there is a limit on all cars that holds them to 60 mph it’s going to take you 60 minutes to go 60 miles no matter how you shape the car, no matter what the aerodynamics of the car are, what kind of tires you have on your car, etc. If you can only go 60 mph you can only go 60 miles in one hour.

The sweet spot is always the same size and same place on all clubs no matter how big the face is and what material you use for the face. You can’t expand the sweet spot any more than you can move the center to a different place on the club face. You can only make the off center hits less ineffective by degrees. Meaning if an off the sweet spot it of 1/2″ looses 15% of your ball speed, you might engineer a face that improves off center hits slightly. But if the sweet spot hit is over the USGA limit, it’s non conforming.

How do companies get a 7 iron to go as far as a 5 iron used to? They lower the loft on the 7 iron to a 5 iron loft. Some call this the vanishing loft disease. As you can see in the chart below. How do custom fitters do it? They fit clubs to your swing and your athletic ability to get more center face hits and maximize your ability to swing faster and more effectively.

So what is the best you can do? You can get a set matched to your swing that allows you to have more consistency, more accuracy and maximizes your distance consistent with your swing speed and use the iron with the proper loft for the distance you want to cover.

You may have noticed that there are no longer any 1 irons or 2 irons being offered. That’s because the 3 irons are now made with 1 iron and 2 iron lofts. Maybe that is why they invented the hybrids? To replace 1 iron, 2 irons, 3 irons, 4 irons and 5 irons which are the lofts of those dreaded “long irons” that nobody could hit back in the day either.

We now have both hybrids and 5, 7, and 9 woods where once there were no woods other than 1, 2, 3, and 4 wood. Over a period of time we got 5 woods, then they introduced the hybrids.

So the real question you need to ask yourself when you get new clubs is: Do you want to get clubs that make you play better golf? or; Do you want clubs that allow you to hit your 7 iron longer than the other 3 golfers in your foursome?

Custom fitting will help you hit more, better quality golf shots, but it will not guarantee you will out hit your foursome with your 7 iron. It might if your current set is mismatched badly enough with your ability. But there is no guarantee of super yardage gains. I’ve helped many hundreds of golfers over the years to lower their handicap and hit the ball a little farther, and some a lot farther, and the only technology that really helped was the launch monitor that allowed me to see their swing path, the face angle and measure key data points like swing speed, angle of attack, ball speed, smash factor and launch angle. Then allow me to tweak their shafts, heads, club weight, club balance point (Swing Weight / MOI) and give them the right tools to play golf with. Or online the ability of the golfer to provide as much of that information as possible for me to evaluate for their new clubs.

So don’t fall for the hype. For the most part nearly all heads are made equally the same other than design modifications for game compensation. Where the center of gravity is to help hit higher or lower shots, perimeter weighting on irons to lesser twisting at impact to improve on off center hits and somewhat larger faces for those that need them. For irons, scratch players don’t need the deep cavity backs and average golfers don’t need to try to play with muscle backs. For drivers scratch players can use low lofted drivers because of their swing speed creating enough spin to take advantage of aerodynamic lift from the ball’s dimple pattern, and average golfers need more loft because their swing probably doesn’t create enough spin. For drivers it needs to be over 100 mph club speed.

So don’t buy from manufacturers claims, buy from a knowledgeable clubfitter who can put you in a set that matches your ability. You’ll play better and enjoy it more.

Some time back I was going back and forth with Tom Wishon in an email exchange about fitting shafts. I have a fused spine so I asked Tom what he thought would be the best type shaft for me. Tom’s reply is below…

Short Backswing with Strong Acceleration on the Downswing

Short backswings with strong acceleration on the downswing typically require the shaft to be stiffer overall or more tip stiff than what might otherwise be indicated simply by the golfer’s clubhead speed. The reason is because a short backswing with a more forceful transition move to start the downswing puts more bending force on the shaft than will a long backswing with a more gradual acceleration of the club on the downswing.

An Accurate Swing Speed is Needed for Fitting

This is where having an accurate swing speed rating for shafts can be helpful in the shaft fitting process. At Wishon Golf we pioneered the creation of swing speed ratings for shafts based on a 10mph range to allow for differences in shaft bending force among golfers with the same measured swing speed at impact.

For example, let’s say we have three golfers that all have the same measured driver swing speed of 90mph coming into impact with the ball. Golfer A has a shorter backswing with a very forceful start to the downswing. Golfer C has a longer backswing with a slight pause at the top, followed by a gradual acceleration of the club to the ball. Golfer B has a normal backswing with average transition force to begin the downswing.

As the “average” golfer with a back-to-downswing transition of average force, shafts with a swing speed rating of 85-95mph would be suitable for the initial evaluation of the overall stiffness of the shaft because Golfer B’s swing speed of 90mph is right in the middle of the swing speed range of 85-95mph. Golfer A on the other hand is putting more bending force on the shaft from his short backswing coupled with a fast and forceful acceleration of the club to start the downswing. Because of that, Golfer A needs a stiffer shaft than Golfer B. As such, the shafts for Golfer A would come from those with a swing speed rating of 90-100mph because in an accurate swing speed rating, the higher the swing speed rating, the stiffer is the shaft. Finally, with his smoother and more gradual acceleration of the club, Golfer C puts less bending force on the shaft. Because of that, the shafts for Golfer C would come from those with a swing speed rating of 80-90mph, indicating they are less stiff to match with his 90mph swing speed that has less bending force in the swing characteristics.

In addition, typically the more forceful and aggressive the transition and downswing of the golfer, the heavier the shaft weight or the swingweight/MOI of the club could be depending on whether the golfer has a preference for clubs with a heavier total weight (heavier shaft weight) or with a more pronounced head weight feel (higher swingweight/MOI). I say could be and not should be because it is possible to create enough weight feel to prevent the forceful swinger from being too quick with his tempo by using a light shaft with a heavier swingweight/MOI. Golfer experience, personal preference or hit testing is how the determination is best made.

And conversely, the more smooth and easy the transition and downswing move, the lighter the shaft weight but not necessarily the lighter the swingweight/MOI should be for the golfer.

Find and Experienced Clubfitter

So, why would one player choose one company’s shaft over another? The reason relates to the profile of individual shafts, and which profile best suits a player’s swing. Golfers do not all swing with the same tempo, release the club at the same point, or swing with the same swing speed. Because every golfer is different we cannot all use the same shaft profile in our clubs. So how do we know which shaft will perform best for our swing?

Tom Wishon has developed over the decades a shaft matching system by designing shafts for four specific measurement or characteristic of your golf swing. We know from testing and measuring what is needed for each of those swing characteristics. Long slow swings need a different stiffness in each section of the shaft than a short quick and violent swing. Even when the two swing create the same club head speed at impact. Swing speed, downswing transition move, tempo and release point determine how the profile of your shaft should be fitted. With over 50 years experience in observing golfers and playing the game I have noted nuances of the golf swing that also change how a golfer swings. Weight is a major consideration as is length of the club. Pictured below is a frequency machine used to measure shaft profiles.

For a more in depth explanation of the Wishon system of shaft profiling see his explanation.

Shaft profiling allows for a much closer look at how shafts perform under static load versus swing performance. This is done by taking 7 measurements for iron shafts and 8 for wood shafts at five inch increments from the tip of the shaft to the butt end of the club. This work is done by the use of frequency machine to determine the flexural rigidity of each shaft. By using the profiles, we can find out the butt stiffness, mid section stiffness, and tip stiffness which allows me to match each section to each players swing characteristics.

Combine all of this with your health and physical conditioning, your height, how long your arms are and being able to watch specific videos of your swing I can tell you what you need.

So how does this release thing work? Ideally you will hold your wrist cock until the last possible moment to get the best results from your swing. When you release your golf swing is limited to the speed you can swing your arms around your body. When you delay the release the clubhead has to catch up with the arms in a hurry to hit the ball at the bottom of the swing. To catch the arms the head has to accelerate rapidly creating far faster clubhead speed. The faster the clubhead speed the higher the ball speed when impact occurs. The higher the ball speed is at impact the longer your shot will be. More more distance get more ball speed.

So, how does this determine how stiff the tip of the shafts should be? All sections of the shaft need to be stiff enough to keep the shaft stable throughout the swing. If you’ve ever swung a club and you can’t feel where the head is during the swing and you’ve had to slow down your swing to be able to control the swing you might have an idea why the overall stiffness is important. This works in the butt section, in the mid section and in the tip section. For the tip, if you release way early it doesn’t matter a great deal about the tip section. At least compared to the late releaser. If you release late you can really feel a soft tip, and it doesn’t feel good. You will have to slow down and swing easy. Late releasers need a stiffer tip than early releasers.

You will see questions on the order form covering the BMT requirements for your shaft.

The tip section of the shaft is a feel section. Strong powerful players with a late release need a strong tip section. Most others it’s a question of how the club feels when you swing it.

Why do seniors, ladies and Juniors need clubs designed especially for them? Why are the same clubs I see in stores not OK for them?

Seniors, Ladies and Juniors are not as strong athletically as younger and middle aged adults are. Think of weight lifting, or running as other examples of how different they are. When we are young we can lift much more weight than when we can when we get old. We can run much faster than when we get old. Grown men on average can lift a lot more weight than most average ladies and can run faster too. The same can be said for Juniors. Common sense tells us that they need different gear for many things.

Golf clubs are no different. Many do not realize that part of why a golf ball goes as high as it does is because of aerodynamic lift caused by the dimple pattern on a golf ball moving through the air. As shown below these aerodynamic forces cause lift and the ball goes higher.

Without these lift forces the ball does not stay in the air as long and does not carry as far so you do not get as much distance as someone who creates these lift forces. It takes a swing speed of about 100 mph to create enough spin on a driver to exert the aerodynamic lift forces that keep the ball airborne longer. Depending on swing speed a golfer will need sufficient loft on the driver to launch a tee shot at 16° – 20° approximately to get maximum carry for their swing speed.

For this same reason, lack of swing speed, a 13° to 15° #3 fairway is more than likely not a good club in the bag for fairway shots. They simply cannot get the ball in the air enough off the fairway to get maximum distance. Most seniors, ladies and juniors need at least a #5 fairway or even a #7 fairway to launch high enough to get maximum distance off the fairway.

Iron clubs are 3° to 4° different to allow average golfers to get 10 to 12 yards distance gap between irons. Because of swing speed that simply isn’t enough gap for seniors, ladies and juniors in most cases. They need about 6° to have significant distance differences between irons.

Shafts have to be different also. Shafts designed for the capabilities they have and to help them get the ball in the air for more distance. Shafts that feel good to them and make the game easier and more fun for them to play.

Why do I use Wishon Shafts almost exclusively in my custom built clubs? Because I know they will fit the swing I’m trying to help. Why? See below…

A Wishon Golf clubhead custom fit and custom built with a Wishon Golf shaft offers golfers the absolute best fit and allows golfers to achieve success in their search for their perfect golf clubs.

Wishon Golf – not simply the golf industry leader in clubhead design but the industry leader in shaft design as well.

The industry wide contributions of Wishon Golf to understanding and advancing shaft performance technology include:

In 1991 Wishon was the first to publish a book – a book, not just an article – solely devoted to shaft technology titled, The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting. This was the first time anyone in the golf industry published empirical measurements of the flex and other specifications of thousands of shafts. For the first time ever, this book made it possible to definitively compare shaft stiffness to know how stiff one shaft is to others. For many years after the book was published, to keep the industry up to date, Wishon provided an annual publication of each year’s new assortment of shafts introduced by all the shaft companies.

Wishon Golf was the first to publish measurements of the full-length stiffness progression of shafts with its ground-breaking Shaft Bend Profile Software in 2006. The data in Wishon’s 1991 book only offered one measurement of stiffness for comparison purposes. Wishon’s Shaft Bend Profile Software visually showed golfers how thousands of shafts compared in their stiffness over their entire length from butt to tip. With this never before seen information it was possible to predict the performance of a shaft for any golfer before the golfer bought or tried the shaft in a club.

Wishon Golf was the first to clearly explain exactly how shafts bent, twisted, curved and performed during the swing in its technical writings during the 2000s. Prior to this no one had ever explained exactly how different swing movements caused the shaft to bend in different ways and in different places on the shaft.

Wishon Golf was the first to identify the exact swing characteristics that have a significant effect on the bending and performance of the shaft. With its focus on evaluating the golfer’s Transition Force, Downswing Tempo and Point of Release, Wishon Golf pushed the industry years ahead in the ability to evaluate a golfer’s swing for the purpose of accurate shaft fitting.

And now, with its emphasis on studying the full length stiffness progression of thousands of shafts, Wishon Golf is pushing the envelope with shaft designs that uncover performance and feel elements in golf shafts that have never been attempted, let alone even envisioned.

Wishon Golf custom designed shafts deserve every bit as much respect as Wishon designed clubhead models. Different swing movements most definitely require different shaft designs to optimize each golfer’s ability to maximize their ball striking potential. Wishon Golf shafts are only designed for specific golfer swing types and represent the culmination of over 30 years of in-depth shaft research and incorporate a number of golf industry shaft design and shaft R & D firsts. In truth, no shaft company has contributed as much to the technical understanding of shaft performance and to the advancement of accurate shaft fitting technology than Wishon Golf.

The major shaft companies have kept shaft fitting in a state of total confusion forever by continuing to use us generic, undefined letters or single digit numbers to inform golfers of the FLEX, perhaps the single most important specification of a golf shaft.

With absolutely no standards in the game for how stiff any of the 5 primary flexes (L, A, R, S, X) are, it is an absolute fact that the R flex from one shaft company is the same stiffness as the S flex from another or the A flex from a third. Wishon Golf never designs a shaft without including an accurate swing speed range based on empirical measurements of the shaft’s stiffness to convey exactly how fast the golfer needs to swing to be able to be matched to the flex design of the shaft.

The graph below shows the full length stiffness measurements for 7 different shafts, all labeled by their respective companies as R flex. A quick look at the 41 inch grip end measurement shows all these R flex shafts vary in stiffness by 28 cycles per minute – a three flex range, yet all are labeled as an R flex. The same is true for shafts within every letter flex designation.

Not only that but the shaft industry has also used completely generic descriptions of how shafts vary in the distribution of stiffness over their full length. Just how is a golfer to know how stiff is a shaft with the description of “tip stiff” or “butt firm” or “low bend point” or any of the other completely non-specific labels given to shafts to try to help golfers choose what’s best for them. Every shaft maker designs their different model shafts with a different distribution of how the stiffness changes over the length of the shaft but they give golfers nothing in the way of empirical, specific information to compare shafts to be able to know which shafts are suitable, and which are not for each golfer.

The graph below shows the full length stiffness measurements for two shafts which are virtually the same for the butt stiffness but vary hugely in their stiffness over the rest of the length of the shaft. Both are labeled as R flex but are so different that any experienced golfer would swear one was an R and the other was softer than an L. How could golfers possibly choose the best shaft flex for their game in the face of this total lack of definitive information?

As I continue to custom fit and sell the custom fitted Wishon EQ1 irons, hybrids and fairways the positive comments continue to come in. Golfers really like these new designs by Tom Wishon. Even the Sterling users who decided to switch to the EQ1s are very pleased at the added distance and gap control of the new designs. But, not only the irons but the hybrids and fairways too.

The hybrids are great and the fairways at shorter lengths are as long or longer than the standard off the shelf lengths you find in golf stores and golf shops. The fairways at 41 inches seem to work really well with just as much distance or more and far more control and easier to hit. Nothing but 5 star reviews for EQ1s.

2021 Single Length Update: Most of the information on this page has been here for several years now and is a bit dated. The Wishon Sterlings were great clubs and I played them from day one almost. The new generation EQ1-NX single length clubs are far better designs and now we have both hybrids and fairways that can be made single length too. If you read my Testimonials Page you will find many examples of my golfers who use single length and have improved their game. You will also see examples of golfers who prefer traditional length clubs and they too have great success with my custom fit clubs. Now that I have several years experience with single length I’m convinced that if you do not get to play and practice often they are the best choice for you to maintain a solid can consistent game.

I have players with all irons the same length and all hybrids a bit longer than all fairways even longer but all the same length. I also have players with irons and hybrids at the same length then fairways a good bit longer. All of this will be decided during the fitting sessions we have. There is no way to predetermine what you need based on what we think we know. There are so many variables to deal with we simply have to go through the process, ask all the questions and analyze the answers before we make your decision for your clubs.

Why would you as a Golfer want to change from Traditional Length Irons to Single Length Irons? …or Single Length hybrids? …or Single Length fairways?

With single length irons all irons are the same length, same weight, same lie angle, and have the same shaft. They only require you to learn one iron swing not 6 or 7 or 8 swings for 6, 7, or 8 irons of different lengths, depending on how many irons you have in your bag. Easier to practice, easier to warm up, easier to play. Should make it easier to perfect your iron swing with the same amount of practice as before.

Since the Wishon single length irons arrived on the scene I’ve sold many dozens of sets and my golfers love them. Especially those who have been playing for a long time and do not have the time to practice as much as they once did. Play all irons with the same stance, same ball placement in your stance and same swing. The only difference is the loft on the clubs to get different distances on your shots. Easy, peasy!

This year we are seeing the addition of Single length hybrids and fairways to go with the single length irons. No, that doesn’t mean that every club in the bag will be the same length. It means that all the irons will be one length, all the hybrids and be one length and all the fairways can be one length. For some the irons and hybrids can be the same length. Rather than having 13 different swings for 13 different lengths you can now have one swing for your driver, one swing for your fairways and one or two swings for hybrids and irons. We’ve all heard the K.I.S.S. theory, or Keep it simple stupid, so these new clubs makes it more simple to play golf. The simpler, or easier you make the game the easier it is to play. Right? Especially for the weekend or recreational golfer who doesn’t have the time to practice like the Club Champion or Tour Players.

Tom Wishon’s new EQ1-NX Single Length Irons, Hybrids and Fairways are new for 2020. Better design for better performance with custom fitting, better feel with only one swing to learn with all lengths and designed for more forgiveness so you hit them better and longer than previous designs.

Watch the video below by Mark Crossfield.

Do you have time to practice enough to be a great golfer?

Do you want to simplify your game and make it more fun and easier to score better?

How much practice time do you have?

How often do you practice?

Single length clubs promote a simple concept to make playing the game easier. You only need one swing for all of your irons. Better ball striking, more accuracy, more consistency, leads to lower scores.

Mark hits a full set of Wishon Sterling Single Length irons and records the data for comparison. Lots of great information about single length performance.

The single length idea have been popularized recently by the Current NCAA Champion and Current US Amatuer Champion Dryson DeChambeau. The idea is simple. All irons are the same length, same weight, same lie angle, same swingweight/MOI and all should swing the same way from club to club. The only difference in each club is the loft to achieve different distances, the same as traditional clubs.

Here is a video clip from Bryson DeChambeau: The Golf Scientist. By now you are probably aware of his performance at Augusta in the 2016 Masters. He was in second all alone through 35 holes. The clubs work.

Both are quality products but the Sterling is a higher priced club and is reported to have more technology to help golfers gain more distance. The proof is in the pudding though and since the Sterling’s are just now shipping it will be a while before we know how the PinHawk and the Sterling compare. If you want to find out try one of our members below and hit some demo clubs and find out how you like them.

The PinHawk set has a 4 hybrid option and the Sterling has a 5 hybrid option. Both are a result of the current success of NCAA golf champion Bryson DeChambeau using single length clubs. Although single length clubs have been around for a long time, DeChambeau winning the NCAA Championship and his recent success has helped to spur a new interest in single length irons in golfers around the world.

Bryson DeChambeau recently became the 2015 NCAA Individual Men’s Champion. He is a Physics major at Southern Methodist University (SMU) – and he has taken a very interesting approach to the golf clubs he plays with.

Of note… all of his irons are one length – 37-1/2 inches – and one lie angle – including his long irons and all of his wedges. Each club head weight is the same – 268 grams – and so the MOI and swingweight of each club is exactly the same. He has decided to do this so that he can use exactly the same golf swing for each club. The clubs where specially built for him.

His success has spurred interest in single length clubs. From the scattered reports from the sets that have gone out many golfers are finding them easy to hit and more consistent. It’s too early to say with certainty that the single length will work for all golfers but it seems at this point it does help some.

The demand has been such that the initial offers were sold out in record time and both companies listed here are struggling to get resupplied. It looks like it may be May or afterward before supply catches up with demand for single length irons. If you are interested you may need to buy now if you can find them available, or be prepared to wait a few months for supplies to catch up.
