So, how do you determine what kind of fitter you are getting? Tom Wishon outlines this for us in his book “The New Search for the Perfect Golf Club”. Tom suggests that you take a look at the online questions they use. At a minimum, they should include the following from Tom and some updated requirements that should help.

Recently the AGCP (Association of Golf Clubfitting Professionals) has been having discussion about the quality of online fittings. Traditionally we’ve held firm that the only way to get a good fitting is to visit a qualified clubfitter in person. That is the only way to collect the data and be sure it is accurate and to see the golfer swing while doing it. It is the only way to change shaft selections, change head selections and add lead tape to the head or counter weights down the shaft and measuring all the measurables while the golfer hits each altered club.
Well, we still believe this, but during this time of isolation and quarantine we cannot do what we do best. So, we improvise and try to do fittings with asking key questions, allowing the golfer to send us videos of their swing and give us the information we can’t actually measure in person.
How well does an online fitting work? I suspect it depends on who is doing the fitting, and what one’s objective is in getting a fitting. Like any other profession there are great fitters and there are fitters. Over the past 20 years I have developed a fitting form to get the information I need to know how to assemble your clubs to work with your swing. I also require videos of your swing to study. Once I get the fitting form and videos and analyze them I will contact you by email and we will discuss your fitting goals. When you are ready to order you clubs click on this Golden Order now link. Most of my customers order a set of irons first to try them out. Once they see how well they like the irons I suggest they begin to fill in the gaps with Hybrids, then with Fairways to cover distance gaps between the irons and their driver. Usually the Driver is the last club they order after they try the Fairways.
Many golfers do not need all 13 clubs to go with their putter. Many only need 10 or 11 clubs to cover all the distances they need on their course for their game. That is not a problem. I have many choices for iron sets and the hybrid and fairways can be ordered one at a time as needed. You only have to buy what you need. You do not have to order extra clubs if you don’t need them in your bag.
